Review of Sakuran (2006) by Vivienne O — 31 Aug 2008
Plot wise, there isn't anything new. Everything is laid out pretty much the way you expect it to but the characters were likeable and reasonably well acted. Anna Tsuchiya is an attractive and enigmatic protagonist; you want to root for her. But I guess you can't really complain about the plot lines since this is an adaptation of the manga of Anno Moyoco and they didn't veer much from the original story. Yes, I know oirans are suppose to be the epitome of class but in the original story, she is a reluctant and rebellious girl, so hey.
Visually, it is one of the most stunning and beautiful movies I have ever seen, but that is expected of Ninagawa Mika, a very talented visual artiste. And with the interesting and flattering soundtrack as the icing on the cake, I think it is an enviable debut indeed. What Marie Antoinette tried but failed, Sakuran delivered.
