Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Brandon O — 07 Jul 2007
An extraordinary (and as Ebert put it, "astonishing") dream about Russian history and the aesthetic experience. The first and only forseeable film to which I'll award a full five stars. I cannot describe how this film made me feel.
These are but a handful of the superlatives that could be properly applied to Russian Ark (the first entirely unedited feature film, consisting of a single uncut shot), and I could add more. But this would be futile; no number of superlatives could begin to capture how I feel about this film.
After all, if you believe the film, the aesthetic experience is irreducible to mere syntax and semantics. Highest recommendation.
