Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Hi H — 27 Oct 2008
For sheer effort, commitment, and overall cinematic merit this film rightfully deserves all the praise it recieves. Admittedly, Russian cultural history isn't my bag. As far as I'm concerned, I care less about the cultural history of Russia than I care about two worms contesting over a deceased ferret.
Did the film make me want to visit the country? Not a chance. Did I feel a connection to the main character? Nuh uh. But, from a technical standpoint this really is an incredible feat. If ALL filmmakers the world over would put this much passion into their productions, cinema would ultimately be in a better place.
Critics will understandably think this is one of the greatest things ever, and who am I to deny them that? Purely from my perspective and my taste in films, I didn't enjoy the story or the setting, and for all I know the facts provided in the film could well be false.
Technically though, this is awe-inspiring. Find another topic which the mainstream audience can get into and enjoy, then watch the big bucks come rolling in.
