Review of Runaway Train (1985) by Tom H — 30 Aug 2007
A slick roller-coaster ride about two escaped convicts in Alaska. They have the misfortune of winding up on a freight train minus an engineer, headed at top speed toward disaster. Jon Voight and Eric Roberts were both Oscar-nominated for their performances, Voight as a hardened and somewhat legendary inmate, and Roberts as the naive, younger inmate who idolizes his companion.
Character actor John P. Ryan gives a delicious turn as the prison warden you love to hate, and infamous crook-turned-writer-actor Eddie Bunker, who also helped write the screenplay, plays Voight's old prison buddy.
Andrei Konchalovsky keeps the film going. The on-location starkness of the film at once make for beautiful photography, while also keeping the audience's attention on the people and events involved.
