Review of Runaway Train (1985) by Aaron G — 07 Mar 2008
Cannon's only claim to artistic integrity is, just like their other odd misadventure into the mind of Charles Bukowski (Barfly), funnily enough a genre picture. But, Runaway Train is a searing character study simply masquerading as a high-speed action film, and it shits all over modern thrillers like Speed and so forth.
Brought to you by the great Akira Kurosawa, the late ex-con-turned-novelist/screenwriter Edward Bunker, helmed by Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky (co-scriptor of Tarkovsky's masterwork Andrei Rublev), and beautifully finished with Vivaldi's haunting Gloria in D.
