What starts as a whimsical rom-com takes a dark turn in its last act, taking you somewhere you never thought you'd go in an indie love story, discomfort. It looks to be in the (500) Days league, but Zoe Kazan (of Hollywood royalty) writes something that sneaks up with deep questions, and then starts screaming them in your ear in one of the most bizarre scenes to crop up in some time.

She also co-stars, and provides the quirk and charm of a Deschanel, with a unique look and a performance that never doubts itself. Dano is stronger than he's been in years, and the cast is littered with big actors enjoying themselves in small parts.

The directorial team of Little Miss Sunshine continues there magic here, as the film draws you in deep enough it manages not to lose you when things get hairy. I'm looking forward to see what Ms. Kazan brings next to the table.

An existential meta-fictional rom-com. Chalk it up.
