Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by Jane Z — 28 Nov 2012
A magical film with creative writing and a genuinely great story to tell. Not only does it provide a whimsical journey of fiction, but has a lot to say about relationships in general. Paul Dano conveys a character torn between human and ideal to the point that you don't know where you stand in his merit.
His line of what a relationship is and what it should be draws from truth and stereotypes that really make the film feel personal and raw for such a seemingly playful setup. Whereas Zoe Kazan delivers the title character of Ruby Sparks with such a refreshing breathe of life that wholly embraces the fantasy that she has been created from.
You fall in love with the her and slowly lose your grip along with Calvin (Paul Dano) as the movie continues down its dark path. Ruby Sparks is a movie you get so caught up in you start to forget its nieve to believe in it, a film that still sparks some genuine emotion and heartfelt storytelling to let you know that love isn't all a work of fiction.
