Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by Jacinta G — 05 Feb 2013
Through my viewing of Ruby Sparks I found myself sympathizing with Ruby more than our protagonist. Controlling, overprotective, and unwilling to accept flaws, whilst at the same time forcing a woman to do things for him without permission - why, with a different soundtrack this could have been a terrifying tale of a young woman controlled by a sadistic, narcissistic man obsessed with her.
Evidently it's not and the film has some touching moments. Although I couldn't help but feel sorry for Ruby. Can you envision having a relationship with one you would consider borderline psychopathic, forgetting this, and pursuing a relationship with this person all over again? Doomed to have the same clashes, the same flaws? It was beautiful, and it made an impression on me, but with so much dissatisfaction as a viewer, I can't say that this film was a complete success.
