Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by Skyler B — 11 Apr 2013
As the movie's tagline tells you, a writers-block novelist dreams and writes about an ideal date who then becomes flesh and blood. Ruby Sparks, written by lead actress Zoe Kazan, is directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who brought us the wonderful movie Little Miss Sunshine.
Lead actor Paul Dano, who plays said novelist, also starred in that movie. Where Little Miss Sunshine is memorably rich in adventures and vividly realized peripheral characters, Ruby Sparks falls a little flat, there.
What makes the movie so watchable, from start to finish, is that you are watching a simple tale well told - on the theme of if you love someone, whatever the rules of their supernatural existence, don't try too hard to change them.
Kazan and Dano, who are also a couple in real life, clearly invested a lot of passion in the project with excellent performances from both.
