Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by Diego Armando D — 31 May 2014
Ruby Sparks is as tragic and heart breaking as it is wonderful and funny. With Paul Dano as the lead character Calvin, he gives us a down trodden man who finds inspiration and ultimately lover in the most unlikely of places; through his own writing when his latest creation Ruby Sparks comes to life in the form of Zoe Kazan (who wrote the screenplay and is Dano's off-screen girlfriend).
In Kazan playing Ruby we have a sweet, angelic sometimes slightly quirky girl who is unaware of her true role in Calvin's life and plays Ruby with such naivety that you can't help but fall in love with her.
With a supporting cast of Annette Benning, Antonio Banderas, Elliot Gould and Chris Messina you follow Calvin and Ruby through the beginnings of their "relationship" and through every twist and turn it takes.
As Heartbreaking as the third act may be, The film ends on a positive note and left me feeling quite choked up in the end.
