Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by P M — 23 Feb 2013
I never cared much for "Little Miss Sunshine" (see my review), so I hoped for a bit more from two directors on "Ruby Sparks". Did it? meh. Like LMS, Ruby has some witty moments and decent acting.
In this case, a successful but socially awkward writer accidentally creates a live version of his dream mate. The familiar romantic story arc follows. Initially, it seemed to be heading to high-quality Woody Allen territory, but it stumbled far short of that.
Much like LMS, the movie drifts from inspired to pedestrian, and unfortunately caves in to another Hollywoody ending. In the end, it was OK, but I think it had far more potential. My wife said it was a "sweet story".
