Review of Rubber (2010) by Iain B — 11 Aug 2011
Rubber's overarching idea is clever enough to intrigue for an hour or so, but it's very clear that director Dupieux is either unable or unwilling to provide said idea with enough plot depth to make it do so.
And when it seems Dupieux has hit a roadblock in his story, he inserts an overtly expository scene that he appears to think is super clever, but is in reality an insult to the film's audience in its contrived "originality" and its arrogance.
Because I fell in love with both the movie's base idea and its black-haired female character, I ultimately recommend it; but in order to fill its potential, Rubber would have needed to either trim 20-30 minutes off its runtime, or add at least a couple extra turning points to its plot.
