Review of Rubber (1936) by Panta O — 29 Jun 2013
RUBBER is getting some great press and reviews but frankly, what a bore. I do agree that the film is beautifully shot and the score is wonderful but it all becomes so tiresome. At first I was really intrigued, director Quentin Dupieux stages the opening wonderfully and gives the tire a true personality.
Most importantly he underscores the cliches of filmmaking and how we actually react to the classical codes of film construction firmly established by the early part of the 20th century. Alls great until.
.. The tire has telekinetic powers like CARRIE. This destroys everything the director put into place it just becomes a long series of heads blowing up. Not single interesting feature after such a promising beginning.
It all felt very high school and so redundant. Like a long series of fart jokes. Worst of all, Dupieux references some truly brilliant grindhouse fare and best of all Spielberg's extraordinary DUEL but RUBBER made wonder if Dupieux had actually ever seen this film.
