Review of Room (2015) by Andrew P — 22 Mar 2016
OK, so Sunday I managed to catch Brie Larson's (Oscar-winning) turn in "Room". It was solid stuff. The scenario is awful. The aftermath is inconceivable. The rapport between mother and son is soul-seeringly beautiful and mental stability resulting from the circumstances is fragile at best.
For all that, there were only brief moments when I was genuinely moved to a tear or fury and disgust at the perpetrator of their horror. There was a disconnect which even the undoubted cutesy charm of the little'un couldn't transcend for me.
Perhaps I simply don't find BrieL engaging? I certainly couldn't understand the rave reviews or the Oscar award. Charlotte Rampling in "45 Years" was far more contained and strained in 'keeping it together' and infinitely more compelling as a result.
Personal preference, I guess.
