Review of Room (2015) by Scott G — 23 Feb 2016
Having loved the book, and adoring Brie Larson since SHORT TERM 12 (not to mention UNITED STATES OF TARA), I was worried about my expectations going into this. I'm thrilled to say that every aspect exceeded what I'd hoped for -- Ms.
Donoghue's adaptation of her own novel, presented deftly by Mr. Abrahamson's imaginative, pitch perfect direction, is powerfully cinematic, easily slaying the myth of authors lacking the objectivity to adapt their own work.
None of which should imply that the main entree here is not the brilliantly intertwined performances of Ms. Larson and Jacob Tremblay. None of this would have held together if not for the incredible intimacy they achieve as a mother and son bonded by extraordinarily demanding circumstance.
Indeed, the only interruption of my complete absorption was from occasionally remembering the gobsmacking inexplicability of this exciting new artist's snubbing by the Academy. In a year of supporting actor nominations lackluster enough to make Sylvester Stallone, of all people, the favorite to win, the omission of this young man's astonishing work is beyond ridiculous.
