Review of Rollerball (2002) by Bryan G — 08 Dec 2007
The commentary track is deceptively simple; just listening to director Norman Jewison remember aspects of the film and filming is very interesting. Jewison talks of almost renting the LA Coliseum to build the RollerBall track, but settled on a German track location, the only other place that would work for his film.
He talks of having to invent the "rules" and action of the game RollerBall, and educating the actors playing the "fans" how to follow the action. He talks about the long search for a sports commentator who could keep up with the pace of the fictional sport, eventually going with a hockey announcer.
Jewison also reveals the magic of using Classical Music for films set in the future, in that the music is already somewhat familiar and timeless. The original "RollerBall" is a great movie about Corporations and the Individual, with action, interesting themes and good performances, especially from John Houseman.
The Director's Commentary adds understanding to the magic.
