Review of Rollerball (2002) by Lenny G — 03 Mar 2009
I've probably seen this about 5 times and always love it. It still holds up after all these years. At a time when the world is divided into corporations that provide people with everything they need (food, luxury, energy, etc.
) the game of Rollerball has been created to "demonstrate the futility of the individual." However, one man, the great Jonathan E. has survived this arena for 10 years . . . and now the top executives want him out.
Well, he's not ready to give up and even in a championship game where there are no rules, no substitutions and no time limit he rises to thwart the powers that be. It's thought provoking, sad and thrilling.
James Caan and John Houseman make for wonderful adversaries.
