Review of Rollerball (2002) by Craig C — 02 Jan 2015
Back in 1975 (waay before toss like Mickey Blue Eyes), James Caan was the man, and along with the Godfather and the Gambler, Rollerball marks a highpoint in his otherwise patchy career.
Despite spawning a predictably shite remake years later (NB: LL Cool J is not, repeat NOT an actor), this sci-fi cult favourite has dated reasonably well.
Offering an insight into a future where multi-national corporations rule the world and ultra-violent sports keep the public entertained (are we really that far off?), Rollerball also works on another level, by delivering more than its fair share of thrills 'n' spills courtesy of the film's numerous Rollerball matches (a mixture of speedway, UFC and gladitorial style carnage).
Also features a great scene where rich toffs blow the shit out of trees with fuck off big laser type guns, which is nice.
