Review of Robin Hood (2018) by Healingtoolbox — 25 Dec 2018
A lot of talent and high production design are well-managed here. One of few films to have three good villains, able to keep them well-employed and not confuse the audience. "Boy sent to do a man's job" describes Taron Egerton but he's not awful.
He, Jamie Fox, F. Murry Abramson and the rest all muster admirable AAA conviction in their portrayal of timeworn characters. I think the main issue is cultural timing. Robin Hood resonates with the Yellow Vests in France.
Inequality of the rich is a growing issue in teh US. Does a nascent people's revolt appear imminent in the US? The US revolt seems likely to be slower and more ballot-box-oriented than fighting in the streets as revolution in Robin Hood is portrayed.
The two seemingly unknown screenwriters inject some welcome novelty into the old Robin Hood tropes (please ignore all the anachronisms, including Ben Mendelsohn, who also is doing his best). Without more resonance with the present Progressive political moment, the movie comes across as a very excellent television effort.
