Review of River's Edge (1986) by The Critic ( — 01 Feb 2015
Tim Hunter's surreal film about a disengaged group of friends, one of whom (Daniel Roebuck) has killed another (Danyi Deats), is a wonderful study of, amongst many things, masculinity. There's some very quirky and complex characters here, all of whom possess a very murky moral compass.
Dennis Hopper is superb as the drug-affected adult friend of the group, but the accolades are to be awarded to the central youths here; an animated Crispin Glover, the mesmerising (and overall standout) Keanu Reeves and an engaging Ione Skye Leitch.
Frederick Elmes' cinematography captures the physical and emotional coldness of the town beautifully whilst Howard E. Smith and Sonya Sones' editing keeps the momentum at an appropriate pace. An intriguing and engrossing film.
