Review of Rio Bravo (1959) by Irdna O — 13 Sep 2010
Wayne did a lot of Westerns , some are worth a look, some aren't. This is undeniably the coolest of them all . Playing out in casual TV like fashion, the film builds tension and succeds in creating an atmosphere along with its' usual law vs.
lawless theme. Armies of outlaws surround the town holding one of their own in a jail cell guarded by Wayne, a one armed cantakerous old man (Walter Brennan), a drunk (Martin) and later a kid (Nelson).
In the meantime, Martin battles his demons, Nelson sings a couple of songs, Brennan bitches and waves his arm and Wayne tries to keep it cool with the ever hot poker playing Dickinson getting under his collar.
Sort of remade as John Carpenter's "Assault on Precinct 13".
