Review of Rings (2017) by Will B — 07 Feb 2017
From someone coming from having seen the original Ringu series and books, to a fan of the original remake, this movie is not that bad. It actually has a good script and characters that have a little more depth then the usual horror fare that gets released, especially at this time of year. It further expands the mythos of Samara and the cursed tape and brings it to current time past the wretched vhs tape. It doesn't rely on cheap Jump scares and does offer some good creep value and legit eerie moments.
It does lack in the style that Gore Verbinski brought to the first one and the constant feeling of dread. There is a point where this does turn into final destination and the concept of seeing things happening before they do. While the original did have this, they used it more in a visual meaning rather than a cheap plot device. Many things done in this one do work and are used creatively that merit this a good start point to bring a franchise. Hopefully we shall see.
