Review of Rings (2017) by James R — 12 Feb 2018
Wow this movie was absolutely terrible. There's gonna be very little to say in the positive realm here, but here we go. A somewhat sequel to The Ring (2002) & The Ring Two (2005) this film follows a young lady named Julia (Matilda Lutz) who is concerned after her boyfriend Holt (Alex Roe) doesn't respond to her after going away to college.
End of the movie....I wish. Anyways Julia goes after Holt who mysteriously has joined up in a research group ran by his professor Gabriel (Johnny Galecki). The group watched The Ring video which in their case forces them to share the video to someone else who hasn't seen it, or they die in 7 days.
Julia watched the video of course, but a different version plays for her leading to Holt and her researching more about the girl in the video Samara (Bonnie Morgan) it eventually leads them to a town called Sacrament Valley (yup swear to God) where they uncover more secrets of Samara's past.
The film comes to us 12 years after the last movie and man it just should not have come out. It isn't scary at all and the whole concept is extremely dated regardless of changing the video type to a "viral video" now.
Samara just doesn't compete with the real scares of the world I guess. Also none of the characters are likeable. The only person I even remotely enjoyed was an old crazy dude named Burke played by Vincent D'Onofrio.
The film has some cringe worthy dialogue as well and even with 20 minutes left of the film I felt like there was absolutely no plot that moved any kind of action. The film has a slight "twist" at the end, but it doesn't matter because the movies terrible.
Avoid this one and just rewatch the original remake from 2005 again if you want a good horror film.
