Review of Rings (2017) by Brady L — 03 Sep 2018
The original film is and will always be one of the scariest movies ever made. The sequel was not very well put together and aside from the amazing performance by the contortionist in the well chase sequence, is not fondly remembered for anything.
This movie looked to put a new spin on the Ring mythos with its own story. It attempted to take modern technology, the infamous videotape and a bevy of new abilities for Samara to explain their new storyline.
However, what we got was something akin to 2 hours of jump scares mixed with bad acting and CGI Samara. This movie needed to keep Samara away from the spotlight, take some notes from the original Jaws movie.
She was on screen more in this film then she ever had been in the previous 2 films. Going forward with this character and this franchise, we need Samara to be a malicious murderer who only kills based on the viewing of her video and there is no real way to stop her once you watch the tape.
My disappointment in this film is solely based on me wanting to see Samara become more of a slasher killer like Freddie Krueger and not constantly be told to sympathize with her.
