Review of Rhapsody in August (1991) by Alex T — 26 Aug 2008
One of Akira Kurosawa's late works, the film is both a touching family drama and a subtle treatment of the painful memories and feelings that linger from the dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki.
The restrained emotions throughout most of the film accentuate the grandma's final rhapsody of grief. I wish I knew the significance of the Japanese children's song about the rose though.
