Review of Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) by Daniel K — 30 Jun 2013
2: This is an interesting franchise and it's interesting that I've stuck with it over the years. There are two reasons. First, I was, and still am to some extent, a big fun of Milla Jovovich. And I don't mean of her skills as a dramatic actress.
Second, the original game and two of three additional installments are some of my absolute favorites. The original game is one of those formative memories from my childhood. My experience with it is akin to that I had with films like The Shining, Friday the 13th, or Halloween.
In many ways this is a very pure cinematic achievement. It essentially does it's best to re-create some of the feelings associated with playing the video game. It is as if these characters are simply re-enacting the game.
Granted, this plot is arguably less engaging, complex, cinematic, etc, which is not the direction one would assume this to go, but still reminds one of the experience. In other words, it is not a very good film, but I manage to get some enjoyment out of it.
