Review of Requiem for a Dream (2000) by Lucas Y — 24 Oct 2012
One of the most intense, moving & overall best films I've ever seen. Darren Aronofsky is a master of his craft! This movie is so meticulously well put together from the direction, cinematography, acting, editing and of course Clint Mansell and the Kronos Quartet's chilling score.
Ellen Burstyn delivered the best female performance I've ever seen hands down. The fact she got zero award recognition for playing Mrs. Goldfarb is a travesty & shows you the people who give out those awards don't know shit.
Leto, Connelly and Wayans are all very good as well. I enjoyed every one of their stories, but Burstyn stole the movie. Overall, I feel it should be required for everyone to see this film. It's not a happy story & doesn't really teach you anything you don't already know.
The message is as simple as it gets, yet somehow I'm completely captivated & get chills every time I watch this. It makes Trainspotting look like Thomas the Train. Pure movie magic.
