Roman Polanskis first English film is pretty scary stuff even by todays standards of gore .

Catherine Deneuve is very convincing as a woman who when left on her own becomes more and more unhinged as the film progresses.

Polanski finds scares in the downright ordinary from a ticking clock, a ringing phone and a church bell.

Add to this mix a decomposing rabbit, hands coming out the wall and two nasty murders and you have a film of immense power and one with the power to disturb also.

Polanski survived the Warsaw getto and this part of his life allows him to focus on the cerebal side of fear rather than going for the BOO side of shocks.

That said the film does have some jump out your seat moments and an ending which leaves to open to question what you have seen.

A strong template for what followed in Rosemarys baby ,this is one horror film which stands the test of time.
