Review of Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) by Amy D — 30 Mar 2011
I know critics didn't care for this one at all, but I thought it was loads of fun. Too many folks shy away from anything called "opera" but opera is really all about spectacle, often bigger than life. This film has that in spades.
Yes, it's wacky and can drag at times. Yes, some of the songs are annoying. Yes, the case has some issues with lip-synching. And I'll be the first to tell you that not everyone in the cast is a strong singer. But it's so inventive and different from anything else. In this day and age of remakes, re-imaginings, and sequels of sequels, it was rather refreshing.
Alex Vega does an ok job--I would have liked to see a stronger singer in that roll. Paris Hilton is not the best singer in the film, but surprisingly enough, she's not the worst (sorry, Mr. Moseley). But casting Anthony Head as Nathan is perfect. He brings the much-needed humanity to this roller-coaster film and I found myself actually crying at the end.
