Review of Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) by Mojokujo — 09 Oct 2015
While many try to compare it to otherwise unrelated things, Repo is pretty much its own thing and that is EXACTLY why it has a cult following. Is it trashy and more style then substance? Yes. But that's the thing: it makes for some sweet and cheesy melodrama. This is a movie that is good for those of us with less refined tastes, who want something wild, unapologetic, and bizarre.
Its underlying message against superficiality is otherwise appreciable for those of us that feel put off by society's preoccupation on looks. The execution thereof is mired beneath the flatness of the characters' struggles and personalities. Many of them are comical or sobering. Still, it can be charming.
