Review of Repo Men (2010) by J W — 17 Jun 2011
What this movie lacks in believability, it makes up for with intense sexuality and brutal violence. Despite Law's character's sudden change of heart, so to speak, as well as a few B-movie cheese moments (the headphone jack in the ear comes to mind), the overall movie experience was generally fun and interesting to watch.
I felt that the sex and gore were tactfully placed, as if to punctuate the tension rather than for the sake of an R rating. The twist ending should have been obvious, since there were a few hints thrown in, but the fast pace of the last act prohibits too much contemplation on the matter.
Character development is partly built with flashbacks, but they are brief and add to the flavor of the movie without delving too deeply into the characters' psyche. The tone of the film is a dark, corporate-controlled vision of the near future set in a sexually liberated yet unforgiving society.
Despite its problems, Repo Men is a simple yet exciting experience.
