Review of Red River (2011) by Mark S — 15 Dec 2008
One of the best 'old school' westerns, I particularly like it as John Wayne went against type. Sure, he starts the film with his usual gun-toting gruffness and distinctive swagger, but as the story progresses, it is Montgomery Clift's more level-headed cowboy that takes charge and becomes the film's hero.
The stubborn determination of Wayne's character can't hide the fact that he's in the wrong. The story of The Chisholm Trail is an interesting one and the filming of the massive herd of cattle is particularly impressive.
