For sheer size and scope to a production this film, whether referring to 1948 or present day, is just absolutely incredible. That said, this film wasnt anywhere as good as I had hoped or expected it to be.

The narrative was rather flat and boring, with not much inherent conflict within. The constructed conflict between Garth and Dunson felt forced and awkward. And please don't get me started on the twists taken in the final third of the film.

Even so, the performances by Wayne and Clift were very good. Cleft is simply superb in everything he ever did, but Wayne really steals the show here with a tremendous performance. The cinematography is actually pretty good and I did like the score, though I felt the sound for the film was to scattered and uneven.

I could barely hear half the dialogue. I'm not sure if that was purposeful or not but it was still very detracting. Finally, the use of the "novel" to lend authenticity and to explain the narrative simply drove me crazy.

Hated that.
