Review of Red Heat (1988) by Jay L — 22 Jan 2012
"Hey Gumby, honk if you need me.".
The ultimate buddy-cop film, it's got everything you could ever want, pulse-pounding action sequences, endless bullets and shootists, smokin hot one-liners and shear humor throughout. Director Walter Hill (The Warriors, The Last Man Standing) write and helmed the film and did a great job. Let's be honest here, who could ever resist the eighties?.... The entire decade was cheesy, but let's face it, even though the movies were cheesy they were some of the best. This is some top-notch action-packed entertainment, it's filled with thrills throughout and was also the first film to shoot in Russia's famed and very secure Res Square. Walter Hill has a style that's all his own, trademarks that are unique to only him and that's hard to come by these days. Buddy cop films were introduced in the eighties with Beverly Hills Cop and many other classic action comedies, but in my opinion Red Heat stands above them all in my opinion. It's gritty, explosive, funny, rock-solid well crafted and expertly crafted, a film that shouldn't be missed by any action junkie. Red Heat has plenty of bullets, blood and mayhem, damn good entertainment that keeps you watching.
Arnold Schwarzenegger gives his usual tough man performance, an it's nothing out of the ordinary for him. Jim Belushi is pretty good too and gives the film most of its humor. Peter Boyle is great as well. Red Heat is a typical 80's film and it's fun, nothing more and nothing less.
