Review of Red Dawn (1984) by Darrell H — 07 Nov 2012
Its strange to see a reunited C. Thomas Howell & Patrick Swayze (The Outsiders) and Jennifer Grey & Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing) all in the same film. I originally was not interested in this particular film yet, I thought the film might provide an unique perspective.
The film concept is simple: Colorado is invaded by Cubans and Russians as they attempt to conquer USA. A group of high-school students manage to escape to the mountains and attempt to survive. The students realize that their loved ones are being harmed and decide to take action against their enemies. From that point on, its the "Wolverines" vs. the Invaders.
Over the course of the film, we see the high-school students transform from emotional, wimpy children to hard-core and devious soldiers. They experience loss, heartache, pain, saddness, death, and freedom.
The film is depressing and the dull and bleak atmosphere conveys the films overall. This film makes you think that something like this could happen to any town at anytime. I recommend it to film classes as it is unique in exploring war and humanity.
