Review of Rebel Without a Cause (1955) by Curtis H — 15 Nov 2008
Underapreciated: when people think of Rebel Without a Cause, all they can think about is James Dean's fantastic but short lived career. This movie is more than just a star vehicle for the imitable Mr.
Dean; it is a fantastic portrayal of the young and restless American teenage society. The performances are fantastic, Natalie Wood's being suprisingly the weakest. Edward Platt is fantastic as the police chief, the one adult who understands that the kids are not the way they used to be, but perhaps the best performance of all is that of Jim Backus, the spineless, confused, but well meaning father.
On the whole, a breathtaking piece.
