Review of Rebel Without a Cause (1955) by Ryan V — 03 Jul 2014
A wayward teen (James Dean) struggles to live a normal life in a new town, but his bad luck and his sense of pride can't keep him away from trouble. Rebel Without A Cause is a defining film of its own time, but its message about tortured adolescence is just as relevant now as it was in 1955.
Nicholas Ray keeps the story going with his slick direction while Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, and Jim Backus turn in career-best performances. This film is justifiably famous for its kinetic portrayals of knife fights and drag racing, but its heart is definitely in its characterization.
