Review of Rashomon (1950) by Marco F — 24 Sep 2010

I've come to appreciate this film more considering I saw it on a brilliantly restored print in a movie theater. Seeing it in a theater is an experience. This is a masterpiece, the exemplary performances (especially by Machiko Kyo and Toshiro Mifune) are great, as is the cinematography).

See it. Immediately. What I really loved about this film are not just the performances and the cinematography but the eventual point that Kurosawa makes through and throughout this film. Also what I loved about this film is that we don't see the authority in charge- the characters speak to the audience, not to off-camera authority- because authority in this story is irrelevant.

There is no authority. That's pretty much the point the movie is making, I think.
