Review of Rashomon (1950) by Joey F — 04 Jan 2018
Random guy: Dialogue is inherently un-cinematic.
Kurosawa: Hold my beer.
There's so much to like about this movie, but the thing that I took away the most was how absolutely incredible the blocking of the actors is throughout. The drama of what's being discussed is so palpable just from where everyone is positioned in relation to each other and the camera. Beyond that, the story of the film is very inspired, truly captivating, and told with clear vision and style. Unfortunately not everything in the film holds up so well today (a fair few of the performances), so you do have to forgive some cheesiness. If you can get past that though, I highly recommend checking this one out.
