Review of Rashomon (1950) by Doug C — 19 Feb 2011
Akira Kurosawa's wonderful adaptation of Ryunosuke Akutagawa's short stories "Rashomon" and "In a Grove," this film does a great job of portraying the rape of a woman and the murder of her samurai husband through the mutually exclusive accounts of four eyewitnesses, including the deceased himself through a medium.
A poignant study of the relationship between narrative, memory, and proof in eyewitness testimony, accompanied by the powerful cinematography of Kazuo Miyagawa who closely collaborated with Kurosawa on the film.
