Review of Rashomon (1950) by John C — 11 Mar 2013
One of the many highly acclaimed Akira Kurosawa films, 'Rashomon' gives us various perspectives on the same terrible crime. It is the grandfather for the courtroom dramas that we all head to theaters for today.
The difference is, today's stories usually give us a definite conclusion. Modern audiences are used to the smoke and mirrors, the key witness, a twist or turn, and then we are hand fed the final outcome.
'Rashomon' doesn't play by these rules. There is no question about what has happened, just how the events actually took place. The film gives us multiple perspectives and that is it. It is up to the viewer to fill in the blanks.
Who is to blame? Whose story do you believe? Is anyone REALLY telling the truth? Courageous filmmaking that could not be achieved in today's 'explain everything' world. Mandatory viewing for fans of foreign films.
