Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Sean T — 09 Nov 2009
A historical drama set in a more traditional China that looks at the drama that crops up between the multiple wives of a rich man as they compete for his affection. Most of the plot is predictable and it's melodramatic.
There's also so much bitterness and malice in the characters that it's impossible to fully enjoy the spirited acting and beautiful cinematography. A well-presented film with an overly dark and saddening theme.
