Review of Rain Man (1988) by Pendleton B — 13 Apr 2012
Tom Cruise plays Charlie Babbitt, a greedy and egocentric man who discovers that his father's estate is being entrusted to an autistic brother (Dustin Hoffman) that he didn't even know he had. He then kidnaps his brother and goes on a road-trip in the hopes of using this as leverage to claim half of the family fortune.
Charlie, however, discovers that this "Rain Man" can memorize streams of data with almost superhuman accuracy. While starting out as a jaded comedy, the growing bond between Charlie and Rain Man morphs the film into something more affecting.
Cruise does a fine job in the lead, but Hoffman's portrayal is justifiably enshrined in the record of classic cinematic performances.
