Review of Rain Man (1988) by Tyler M — 28 Oct 2010
Dustin Hoffman's performance as Raymond Babbitt is amazing, probably my favorite role of anyone in any role on the entire planet. What shocks me is this man who isn't autistic in any way plays it so convincingly that I would've believed he was. I am autistic myself, and I have a loved one who is autistic like Raymond, and I couldn't help but smile at everything Raymond said, because the innocence and whimsy that Dustin brings to the character is fantastic. I'm glad he won an Oscar for this, he sure as heck deserved it.
His partner, Tom Cruise, however, was okay.
Autism is a disability that affects the way people's brains work. A lot of them like order, and patterns, and like specific routines and really dislike change. And that's autism in a nutshell.
A lot of scenes are brilliant, like the one where Charlie taught Raymond to dance. It was so beautiful and Tom and Dustin's chemistry were second-to-none in that scene, as well as nearly every scene.
But could Tom Cruise try and not be so swear-happy? Didn't like a lot of profane words that came out of his mouth.
The best autism movie ever made, and I'll even go as far as to say that maybe ever will be made.
FINAL VERDICT: 96%.
