Review of Race (2016) by Ian G — 21 May 2016
The potential biopic that could have been more given the material involved and the apparent demand for more blackcentric Academy Award bait, Race is the story of Jesse Owens and how he was recruited by a track guru near a Cleveland Heights and started shattered every record he came across whether it be American, European or Worlds, and how he was presented with the opportunity of a lifetime when he had the chance to race for the American Olympic team in Germany at the height of the Nazi party and stand for everything Germany was fighting against at the time.
There were a couple of chilling moments when Jesse stepped into Olympic Stadium for the first time and seeing the Zepplin flying overhead and Hitler in the booth, and also watching Hurt and Irons have a monologue off as to whether or not to boycott even going due to the Nazi parties stance on human rights.
Despite hitting some subtle points you still feel that they could have had a more balanced cast and the tension cranked up even more to drive the story home rather than it play like a lighter version of the biopic.
Intriguing for sure and could have defintely been greater given the chance.
