Review of Race (2016) by Orlando O — 30 Jun 2016
Race is a fair biographical drama film that gives some great performances from the lead Stephan James as Jesse Owens and his achievement in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. A thing about biographical sports drama and stories about a person's motivation of reaching there goals, even though there is the real world issue of race discrimination and the issue with Hitler's political actions of adding limitations for the Olympic games that prevents Jews from participating.
Director Stephen Hopkins likes to go over the dramatic issue and how they tried to lift the strict rules so all can participate and distract the world away from the political war and peoples prejudice perspectives.
The downside of the film is the story is not quite as interesting, feels like a historical event playing as a repetition to the events we all already know. It is a story about Jesse Owens, getting accepted into college, being mistreated by people cause of his race, and tries out for coach Larry (Jason Sudeikis), who has been washed up from a loss on one of his students.
Larry, inspires Jesse, on how bad the world can be, it is up to him to grab what his goals are. Stephan James gave a great performance and same with Jason Sudeikis, which is really odd for him, but he did his best too.
Besides the fact, that the movie tried to add the suspense and thrilling tone when Jesse is visiting Germany and the feeling of being unwelcomed. The races and competition Jesse competes in, never really excites in a way.
