Review of Race (2016) by Junelkean — 30 Jun 2017
On the 1936 Olympics, Jesse Owens changed history in breaking different world records by receiving four golden medals in a single event. And this biopic tells his struggles before he became the legendary athlete we all know. Owens is played by Stephan James who is incredibly a surprise.
Race is a perfect movie for anyone who is a fan of sport dramas. The best part is how it used Owens' conflicts whether man vs. man or man vs. society to depict his overpowering motivation. It also properly captures the historical disturbances like the racial and religious discrimination against the Negroes and Jews in competing to the Olympic Games during the Hitler Era.
But Race is a long film for what it is trying to pursue and also a short film for what it is trying to balance. This is because of the numerous subplots, which make the film slow-paced at some parts. Yet these subplots have significance to the story, they are not presented as well as it should.
VERDICT: Although subplots aren't well-presented, James stars as “the legendary athlete who changed history” in a biopic that delivers its themes properly.
