Review of Quills (2000) by Jamie C — 09 Jan 2008
One of my favourite films. Originally based on a play, it makes no pretenses about its historical accuracy, but is more an imagined idea about De Sade's impact on society contained within the final years he spent at the Charenton Asylum under the famously liberal Abbe.
The obvious theme here is the argument over censorship and hypocrisy. However, there is also an interesting underlying theme about the survival of ideas and the relentlessness of human energy. The humour is pitch black, but the performances are great.
Definitely Geoffrey Rush's greatest moment to date.
