Review of Quills (2000) by Zarinah H — 30 Mar 2008
This movie is elevated above the average by the strong performances by its lead actors - Geoffrey Rush's Marquis de Sade is very credibly done as a man so obsessed with words that he uses his own blood to continue writing despite being locked up in an insane asylum. Joaquin Phoenix plays the role of asylum director. And of course we have a ravishing Katec Winslet who is drawn to the Marquis' plight and tries to help him.
It is a perceptive look at issues deemed controversial at the time, and is still relevant today - sex, the freedom to voice out one's opinions etc. One of the few movies [others tend to be nothing more than soft-core porn] to study the marquis in an intelligent manner.
