Review of Quarantine 2: Terminal (2011) by Matthew P — 12 Mar 2012
In 2008 American filmmakers decided to remake the spanish horror classic REC. They said it was original but the film was a shot for shot copy of REC. Now Quarantine 2 is a straight to DVD horror flick that surprisingly is NOT a copy of REC 2. It's completely original, except for the fact it's a sequel.
At first, it would seem it's one of those sequels that has NOTHING to do with the original (remember Blaire Witch 2?). However, this film ties in quite nicely with the first Quarantine. It's stand on it's own because it removes the found footage gimmick and relies solely on typical horror movie styles. To make things even better, this film was very low budget, so the director (John Pogue) relies on the sounds and darkness to apply the horror rather than jump scares and gore, which this film actually pulls off some quite nicely. There is a jump scare that no one will ever see coming, even if I told you about it right now. The change in scenery also, makes this film more action pack. We move from an airport, to a plane, back to a terminal (hence the name). It makes the film move a little bit quicker.
The characters are nothing special in this film. They're acting isn't terrible, but it's above normal, and the character development actually works pretty well. Each character has one distinct characteristic that makes he/she different from others...even if that throws them into a horror movie cliche.
Overall, Quarantine 2 is a fast paced, horrorfest that never releases it's grip on you. It may not be perfect, but Terminal is a sequel that stands on it's own, and in my opinion, out does the original.
